What sort of topics could I explore in a Reflective Consultation?
The Reflective Consultation Service provides a confidential space to consider the many complex aspects encountered in clinical work.
The subject of the consultation varies with every consultation. Examples of issues that may be explored include the following:
Feeling “stuck”, and sitting with not knowing or uncertainty.
Understanding how to proceed when mental health or psychological factors are impacting on treatment or management.
Navigating tension or conflict with patients or their families/carers.
Reflecting after critical or stressful clinical events.
Working with and managing clinical uncertainty, for the patient and the clinician.
Exploring managing disagreements or conflict with other clinicians.
Navigating transitioning patients to other providers.
Supervising other doctors and clinicians who are struggling.
Working with complex family dynamics.
Managing when a patient’s story is too close to yours.
Exploring moral distress and ethical dilemmas.
Seeing the situation from the patient’s point of view.
Balancing the impact of work on life.
